Choose a cultivar for the shelf
Choose a culinary cultivar with a suitable mature size. Compact basil is easier to fit into a small setup, but check its seed description against the available height below the lamp. Cultivars differ in leaf shape, branching and flavour; use one cultivar for a first comparison.
Repeated cutting extends the cycle compared with harvesting a whole plant. Leave access to the reservoir and a way to replace solution once the canopy and roots are large. A system convenient for one short lettuce crop may need different maintenance.
Start with seedlings of similar age
Start seeds in a clean suitable medium, following the seed and plug instructions. Keep it moist while keeping leaves above water. Label the sowing date. Comparing plants of different ages says little about the quality of lighting or nutrition.
Transplant when the roots can reach moisture in the chosen system. Do not pinch the stem with the pot or let the plug dry above the solution. Check the plant during its first day after moving it, especially if light conditions changed.
Water and nutrients through a longer crop
Prepare a complete mix for basil and its stage using the chosen fertilizer instructions. Record reservoir volume and doses. When topping up, assess water level and EC according to the method before deciding whether nutrients are needed. Water use increases as the canopy develops.
Normal EC does not confirm that every nutrient remains in balance after many top-ups. Follow the solution-renewal plan and keep a care history. Do not automatically switch mature basil to a stronger fruiting-crop recipe.
Light and room for branches
Check light coverage and space beside the plants. Cutting encourages side shoots, changing canopy shape. Upper leaves can move closer to the lamp while lower leaves become shaded. Reposition plants or raise the light as its instructions allow, keeping the whole growing area adequately lit.
Basil is sensitive to cold. Check conditions near windows and after night-time ventilation. Avoid a constant strong air stream; if leaves dry, review its direction, humidity and access to water.
Cut above a pair of leaves
Use clean scissors. Cut the stem just above a healthy pair of leaves, retaining a lower section with leaves and growing points. This leaves places for side shoots to develop. Do not strip the whole planting for one large harvest.
If the crop is for leaves, remove flower shoots as they appear. Record the cutting date and fresh weight. Plan the next harvest around canopy recovery and plant condition; avoid using the same interval regardless of how the plant is recovering.
Check the crop between harvests
- Inspect new growth and the inside of the canopy.
- Check water level, pH, EC and solution temperature.
- Make sure branching plants are not shading neighbours.
- Remove fallen leaves from the lid and accessible system parts.
- Add the weight of all pickings to assess the full crop.
When basil yellows or wilts, check roots and solution history first. A recent harvest does not itself establish that more fertilizer is needed. If regrowth stops and the cause remains unclear, healthy new seedlings after cleaning may be more practical than repeatedly adjusting an old crop.
